Mastering the Multiple Mini Interview (MMI): Medicine Interview Practise & Expert Prep

What is the Multiple Mini Interview (MMI)?

The MMI is a crucial component of the medical school admission process – and one of the most important stages in your journey toward a career in healthcare. For students preparing through medicine interview courses or a structure MMI prep course, understating the MMI format is essential to success.

The MMI consists of a series of short structured interview stations that assess not just what you know, but how you think, communicate, and behave under pressure. Unlike traditional interviews, this for is designed to reduce bias and more accurately predict your performance in medical school and beyond.

Through each station, admissions panels evaluate a wide range of competencies including:
Ethical reasoning and decision-making
Problem-solving and critical thinking
Communication and interpersonal skills
Professionalism and empathy
Resilience and adaptability
At MedView, our medicine interview courses Australia are designed to provide personalised support, mock interviews, and feedback from current medical students and experts — helping you confidently navigate every MMI station.

What is the purpose of the MMI Medicine Interviews?

The MMI format is a key part of choosing students during the medical admissions process. It tests how well students can make good choices when they know a lot about a topic. This interview style strives to capture a broader evaluation of applicants compared to traditional interviews by emphasizing interpersonal abilities, ethical reasoning, and professional demeanour.

MMIs are like practise runs for real doctor stuff. You get a little bit of time to think, then you have to act or talk about something important. They're not just looking at how much you know from books, but also how you use what you know in real situations. The ultimate aim of MMIs is to pinpoint individuals who are academically adept while simultaneously exhibiting the essential communication skills and ethical acumen required for excelling in the medical profession.

Types of MMI Interview Questions

Each MMI station tests different skills. Common formats include:
Role play
This is one of the more challenging formats in an MMI. Unlike other questions where you're asked to explain what you would do, here you're expected to act out your response. You may play the role of a medical student or doctor, demonstrating empathy, communication, and professionalism in real-time. This station is especially valuable in medicine interview courses for building your confidence in handling emotional or complex patient interactions.
Professional judgement
In this station, you’ll need to make a clear and ethical decision under pressure. Sometimes you’ll be given limited or overwhelming amounts of information. Your task is to interpret what you know, make reasonable inferences, and explain your decision logically — a key focus of any high-quality MMI prep course.
Communication questions
These stations test your ability to give clear, concise instructions. Often, you’ll be asked to describe how to complete a task — like tying shoelaces or giving directions — to see how well you articulate ideas. Practising with a medicine interview tutor can help improve your verbal delivery and reduce anxiety.
Prioritisation questions
Here, you're placed in a high-pressure scenario and asked to make quick but thoughtful decisions. The goal is to assess how you prioritise tasks when time and information are limited — a core skill for any future medical professional. These are commonly covered in structured medicine interview courses Australia.
Problem-Based Learning (PBL) Stations
Exclusive to the University of Sydney (USYD), this is a group-based interview station designed to assess how well you collaborate, communicate, and contribute within a team. These stations highlight your interpersonal and teamwork skills — a major focus in both medicine interview practice and medical interview tutor sessions.

What to expect at the MMI

In an MMI interview, you’ll rotate through timed stations, answering a variety of scenario-based questions or participating in role-play with actors. Success depends on how well you communicate your thinking, show empathy, and solve problems on the spot. Avoid memorising answers – focus instead on critical thinking and adaptability.

Which universities use the MMI?

The MMI is becoming an increasingly popular admissions tool for medical schools around the world. This interview format helps universities assess not just academic ability, but also key traits like communication, professionalism, and ethical decision-making.

In Australia, many institutions have adopted the MMI to select future medical students. For example:

• Australian National University incorporates MMIs alongside a one-hour group activity to evaluate collaboration and teamwork skills.
• Bond University and Charles Sturt University (in their joint medical program) both use MMIs as a core part of their medicine interview process.

The widespread use of MMIs highlights their value in identifying well-rounded candidates who can thrive both academically and professionally in the medical field.
MMI are now widely used by Australian medical schools, include:
Curtin University
Deakin University
Griffith University
Macquarie University
Monash University
University of Melbourne
University of Newcastle and University of New England (Joint Medical Program)
University of Notre Dame
University of Queensland
University of Sydney
University of Western Australia

Our students have the best stories

These are just a few of the success stories from students who have worked with MedView
In my second year of applications, I decided to give MedView's program a go as I had heard good things about it. MedView gave me the opportunity to meet 4 different students studying medicine all across Australia, who have shared their own bits of wisdom and personal experiences in medical school. Fortunately, I was able to get into my first-preference med school this year!
Kish Arora
University of Sydney
Attending MedView this year has been a great opportunity that took me a long way with my grades. The tutors have boosted my passion for the things I studied this year. Throughout this year there have been many times when I have thought about giving up and choosing a pathway easier than Medicine however talking to my tutors has given me a spark of hope and motivation to keep going.
Ishani Oza
University of Auckland
The worksheets that MedView provided for every class and review sessions were extremely beneficial in testing and finding gaps in my knowledge. The exam review sessions were also enjoyable and gave me a holistic view of the subject. The Q&A sessions after classes were also helpful as it gave me an opportunity to get clarification on concepts I found difficult, without holding up the class.
Sarah Yap
University of Auckland
I was fortunate enough to undergo tutoring from MedView throughout this year. I really valued the insights the tutors had to offer from having gone through the whole first year experience themselves. I believe MedView is doing a lot of good for young aspiring students and I appreciate how the tutors and mentors stick with you throughout the year. It was very inspirational for me.
Chris Varghese
University of Auckland
MedView went above and beyond what I expected. The Medical Interview mentor I had was incredible at identifying my specific areas of improvement, and worked with me to close those skill-gaps. The personalised-tutoring aspect of the MedView process meant that in a short space of time, I could get optimum results in line with my med school aspirations. I'm so grateful for MedView's help!
Alisha Sethi
University of Sydney
Working with MedView enabled me to pursue my dream of getting into medicine. With the help of their amazing tutors, I was able to move my GAMSAT by over 10 points, construct a great portfolio and develop my interview skills. I couldn't recommend them more. The staff are very supportive and go above and beyond to help however they can.
Isabella Nicholson
Notre Dame
As a lot of students in BioMed / HealthSci, I experimented with many companies that offered tutoring for the challenging courses, I found MedView most helpful, as it was a collective that was experienced and well-resourced in providing efficient study help. They were by far the most structured and efficient lessons I'd been to.
Devanshi Jani
University of Auckland
I found the tutoring and support that I received from MedView this year extremely helpful. I really enjoyed the personable aspect of MedView classes. I really enjoyed when the tutors told stories of their experiences in medical school. Often they were directly related to what we were learning at the time and the stories were motivating, inspiring and usually quite hilarious!
Emma Bower
University of Auckland
It has been an amazing experience to work with MedView. I was completely clueless with UCAT but through the courses, they were able to get me up to speed. The tutors are amazing and super knowledgeable. It was a pleasure hearing their experiences and ideas which I took with me into the examinations.
Ryan Dai
University of Otago
MedView significantly helped me achieve my goals and has positioned me well for my education. Through the very thorough tutoring and resources they provided me, they have enabled and enriched me to achieve an ATAR of 99.95! Through their comprehensive and experienced team, they prepared me well for my MMI interviews, receiving offers from both UNSW and UQ medical programs. In one word, my experience with MedView was exceptional.
Vishaak
University of Queensland
My tutor motivated me to want to study medicine even more. He showed me that there's a site outside of just the academics of it, and there's really opportunities to do other things and go beyond just academics. And I think it's quite a nice picture to kind of portray and convey, and to be on the receiving end of that, especially as someone that's going into uni this year!
Jillian Ee
University of Nottingham
Working with top NCEA tutors, who were all current medical students, was extremely useful in keeping me focused and motivated to reach my goals. I found working with a coordinated team of UCAT, Multiple Mini Interview, and high-school curriculum experts super helpful! I would not have successfully gained acceptance into Monash if it were not for MedView's support.
Jeevan Vettivel
Monash University
The tutors were really helpful, friendly & knowledgeable in their respective subjects. year, I found that my individual subject tutoring, as well as UCAT tutoring, helped me achieve the high marks necessary to get into medical school while also providing support when needed. I believe that regardless of your current level in your studies, MedView can help you excel and achieve your goals.
Daniel Tan
University of Otago
The MedView team and tutors were exceptional. They went above and beyond to guide me through the application process, providing incredible academic support and advice throughout the year. The tutors were extremely helpful and knowledgeable. They gave me valuable feedback in specific areas I needed to improve in, optimising the development of my UCAT and interview skills.
Ella Browne
University of Adelaide
I think one advantage that UK medicine now say, advantage or a different perspective it provides over local medicine, is the fact that you can intercalate and do an extra degree apart from medicine. If it wasn't for MedView / Crimson I wouldn't have known this was an opportunity and would probably not have applied to the UK at all!!
Tasha Leow
Glasgow University
It was one of my best decisions to engage with the Medview team last year. Compared to my first attempt to apply to medical schools without any external help, I can confidently say that MedView is a student-oriented team and this has made a massive difference in reducing uncertainties, surrounding preparation, resulting in successfully gaining admission to medical school.
Jitpinant Uranpanichayabhol
University of Tasmania
My experience with MedView was really great. I felt supported by my tutors who were full of life and character, who reassured me when I began to feel stressed about the upcoming exams. My Education Coordinator arranged something very nice for me. I had a twin sister, and we both strove for medicine and they allowed for us to have the same tutor for both interview and UCAT prep so that we could benefit and study together.
Mary Alagha
Western Sydney University
I signed on for MedView’s UCAT and Academic tutoring package and was matched with tutors who were both exceptionally helpful, but also willing to go at my pace when life got in the way. While working with my tutors, I was able to develop study habits, better my understanding of assessment items and get help editing my work. With MedView, I was able to work with my tutors to create massive improvements in my grades.
Simon Gong
UQ (University of Queensland)
MedView has supported me so much in my journey to getting into Medicine. The tutors were great at telling stories of their own journey to med school which made it so much easier and reassuring to know that I wasn’t alone in the challenges I faced. I couldn’t have done it without their guidance.
Natalie Featherston
La Trobe University
I always knew that medicine was what I wanted to do once I finished school so when I came across Medview I knew they would be perfect in supporting me to achieve this. Medview has guided and supported me in so many ways, through school, the UCAT, interviews and admission.
Caitlyn Zamuner

My MedView tutors greatly motivated me through my years in the IB diploma. They took the time and effort to adapt to my learning styles, were flexible with my schedules, and always supported me academically or emotionally. I worked with UCAT and MMI tutors and also received advice during the application process.
Esha Goel

I joined MedView in Year 11. MedView’s personalised UCAT tutoring service exceeded all expectations. As a high school student navigating through the maze of medical school admissions, I was fortunate to have a team of tutors and mentors who provided me with the experience and knowledge to excel in the UCAT.
Nathan Wong
University of Queensland
When I engaged with MedView, I wasn't very familiar with the UK application process. They were so helpful in terms of telling me what I need to do, the deadlines, and the structure of what I needed to do. For example, they gave me the right guidance on what leadership activities to do, when I should have my first draft of the personal statement, improvements for the second draft and so on and so forth.
Rachel Chua
UCL
The entire MedView team has been a huge backbone in my journey to getting into medical school. The tutors and mentors are so warm and friendly that you do not feel intimidated and genuinely enjoy the learning process. I am certain that their involvement has been a huge factor in the outcome of my applications.

I first came across MedView when I attended an information session that was an introduction to applying for med school. For me the advice and support from the MedView team was invaluable. Also having knowledgeable people to ask questions covering all aspects of the application process made me more confident and helped me secure interviews with universities and then my final offers.

Medview helped me feel more confident in my abilities with their support and I had a far more comprehensive understanding of what it took to enter medical school.

MedView has been really helpful to me. I would really recommend the flying start course and weekly revision sessions to anyone who’s wanting to apply for clinical programs. It helps with getting a heads up before the start of uni, and it lets you keep on top of the content and allow you to start revising early on. UCAT tutoring sessions are great too. All the medview tutors are awesome, they are very flexible with timing. Would definitely recommend!!

MedView has provided me with an excellent foundation for my pre-med journey. I found the Flying Start course to be a valuable resource as it helped me ease into the first semester workload, which I would have found much more difficult otherwise. Moreover, the weekly revision sessions were very useful for consolidating lecture content, and I found all of the tutors to be approachable and well-versed at answering any of my questions.
